I. Praesumptio et imperitia Eutychen in errorem impulerunt.
Lectis dilectionis tuae litteris, quas miramur fuisse tam seras, et gestorum episcopalium ordine recensito, tandem quid apud vos scandali contra integritatem fidei exortum fuisset agnovimus; et quae prius videbantur occulta, nunc nobis reserata patuerunt. Quibus Eutyches, qui presbyterii nomine honorabilis videbatur, multum imprudens et nimis imperitus ostenditur, ut etiam de ipso dictum sit a propheta: Noluit intelligere, ut bene ageret; iniquitatem meditatus est in cubili suo (Ps. XXXV, 4). Quid autem iniquius quam impia sapere, et sapientioribus doctioribusque non cedere? Sed in hanc insipientiam cadunt qui cum ad cognoscendam veritatem aliquo impediuntur obscuro, non ad propheticas voces, non ad apostolicas litteras, nec ad evangelicas auctoritates, sed ad semetipsos recurrunt; et ideo magistri erroris existunt, quia veritatis discipuli non fuere. Quam enim eruditionem de sacris novi et veteris Testamenti paginis acquisivit, qui ne ipsius quidem Symboli initia comprehendit? Et quod per totum mundum omnium regenerandorum voce depromitur, istius adhuc senis corde non capitur.

Ἀναγνόντες τὰ γράμματα τῆς ἀγάπης τῆς σῆς, ἅπερ οὕτω βραδύτατα γεγενῆσθαι θαυμάζομεν, καὶ τῇ τάξει τῶν ὑπομνημάτων ἐγύψαντες (sic), τις ἐπὶ τῶν ἐπισκόπων ἐπράχθη, μόλις ποτὲ τί τὸ παρ᾽ ὑμῖν σκάνδαλον ἀναφυὲν κατὰ τῆς ὑγιοῦς πίστεως, ἔγνωμεν· καὶ τὰ πρότερον λεληθέναι δοκοῦντα νῦν ἡμῖν δῆλα γεγένηται, δι᾽ ὧν Εὐτυχὴς, τῇ τοῦ πρεσβυτέρου προσηγορίᾳ τιμῆς ἄξιος νομισθεὶς, πολύ τις ἀσύνετος, καὶ λίαν ἀμαθὴς ἀποδείκνυται· ὡς περὶ αὐτοῦ προφήτου εἴρησθαι. Οὐκ ἠβουλήθη συνιέναι τοῦ ἀγαθῦναι, ἀδικίαν ἐμελέτησεν ἐπὶ τῆς κοίτης αὐτοῦ· τί δ᾽ ἂν ἀδικώτερον εἴη τοῦ τὰ ἀσεβῆ φρονεῖν, καὶ τοῖς οὐ φρονοῦσι, καὶ σοφωτέροις μὴ εἴκειν; εἰς τὴν ἄνοιαν δὲ ταύτην ἐμπίπτουσιν, οἱ κατά τι μὲν ἐμπόδιον ἀσαφείας γνῶναι τὸ ἀληθὲς κωλυόμενοι, οὐκ ἐπὶ τὰς προφητικὰς δὲ φωνὰς, οὐκ ἐπὶ τὰς τῶν ἀποστόλων γραφὰς, οὐκ ἐπὶ τὰς εὐαγγελικὰς αὐθεντίας, ἀλλ᾽ ἐφ᾽ ἑαυτοὺς ἀνατρέχοντες· καὶ διὰ τοῦτο διδάσκαλοι πλάνης ἀναδεικνύμενοι· ἐπειδὴ τῆς ἀληθείας μαθηταὶ μὴ γεγόνασι. Ποίαν γὰρ ἀπὸ τῶν θείων βίβλων παιδείαν τῆς τε παλαιᾶς καὶ καινῆς διαθήκης προσέλαβεν, ὁς οὐδὲ αὐτοῦ τοῦ συμβόλου τῶν προοιμίων ἐδράξατο; καὶ ὅπερ ἀνὰ πᾶσαν τὴν οἰκουμένην τῇ φωνῇ πάντων τῶν ἀναγεννωμένων προφέρεται, τοῦτο κατὰ νοῦν ἔτι τούτου τοῦ γέροντος οὐ λαμβάνεται.
